As Liverpool host AC Milan at Anfield, for their first game of the Champion League group stage, it’s best we take a look at the history behind these two teams, as there is some interesting meetings before.

This is the 3rd time that these two teams have met, but only the first time that is hasn’t been in a Champions League final. Lets just say that the past two meets have been very eventful.

Istanbul- 2005

Do I ever need to say what happened here? I think everybody knows! You never get tired of hearing it, as its class.

The champions league final in Istanbul, AC Milan were favourites, just look at the squads! It was a dreadful start for Liverpool who were 1-0 down after just 50 seconds from Paolo Maldini volley. In the 38th minute, Liverpool were denied a penalty after what seemed to be a handball in the box by Nesta, and Milan went down the other end a scored… Hernan Crespo tap in, 2-0. Just before half time, Crespo near enough seals the game after a beautiful lob over Dudek to make it 3-0.

In the second half, Liverpool completed a dramatic 6 minute comeback to level up at 3-3. It started with a fantastic header from captain fantastic; Steven Gerrard who was inspiring. Smicer then sliced the deficit in half with a long range effort from outside the box. Gerrard was through on goal and was brought down by Gattuso who should have seen red, but regardless, a penalty was given. Xabi Alonso’s penalty was saved by Dida, but Alonso buried the rebound…. 3-3! Liverpool went on to win on penalties which is known as one of the greatest comebacks in football history.

Time for Milan’s revenge on Liverpool. After the dramatic turn of events in Istanbul in 2005, Milan wanted revenge, although we didn’t think cheating would have been the way to do it.

Inzaghi put Milan 1-0 with a handball from Pirlo’s freekick. He doubled Milan’s lead by beating the offside trap and rounding Pepe Reina to slot it into the net. Dirk Kuyt grabbed a consolation late on from a header. A disappointing defeat for Liverpool.

With Liverpool hosting Milan at Anfield on Wednesday, they look to grab 3 points in the group of death, which features Porto and Athletico Madrid. It’s a must win game for both teams, so it should be a great game to watch. The tables have turned in regards to the better squad, with Liverpool now have the much better side. European nights at Anfield are famous for their atmosphere and high expectations, so you know Liverpool are going to turn it on.
