The return of CR7

With the drama surrounding the summer transfer window including the move of Sancho to his former team’s rivals, Messi to Paris Saint Germain, alongside numerous top signings, what more could football fans ask for? That’s right, the move of 4-time Ballon d’Or winner; Cristiano Ronaldo.

It wasn’t a straight forward move for Ronaldo as there was much speculation surrounding his future following the Euros. Reports suggested he could be teaming up with Lionel Messi in Paris, however Ronaldo himself stated his desire to remain in Turin with Juventus. However, following a sharp turn in his decision, Ronaldo stated he wanted out. Manchester City, United’s arch rivals were front runners to sign Ronaldo, with terms reportedly agreed. Who could stop this from happening? That’s right, only one man could… Sir Alex Ferguson. Following a phone call from Sir Alex Ferguson, Ronaldo changed his mind whilst City pulled out of talks due to not wanting to pay a fee for CR7. Ronaldo went on to sign for United and the return of CR7 to Manchester is complete.

Cristiano Ronaldo: The Biography

What changes for Manchester United?

With the signing of a proven goalscorer for many years, as well as being one of the greatest of all time, this could only mean good things United and the Premier League…Surely?

Short term

Although fans didn’t questions the rationale behind signing Ronaldo, many were left confused as to why the defensive midfielder issue was resolved. Alongisde increased revenue through the likes of shirt sales, Ronaldo will bring goals to United. There have been many times that United have needed the elite calibre player to get them across those games were goals are scarce. With the likes of Sancho coming in, Rashford due back from injury next month, Edison Cavani, Anthony Martial and the young ace in Mason Greenwood, United are spoilt for choice in the attacking category, which is crucial considering the return of Champions League football shortly.

Some may wonder if Ronaldo’s arrival could be limiting Mason Greenwood’s development in terms of game time, or if this could be the end of Anthony Martial in Machester. However, with Ronaldo being 36 and signing a 2-year deal, this could be perfect to get United back to where they belong; competing for league titles and challenging in Europe, whilst taking the pressure off the younger players including Greenwood. From a tactical standpoint, the defensive focus for opposing teams is bound to be Ronaldo considering how lethal he can be in front of goal. This may open up spaces in the wider channels for Sancho, Greenwood and Rashford where these young Englishmen may flourish with more time and space. It also provides a great target in the box for a different dynamic within their system.

Overall, it seems as though not much can go wrong, but football is full of suprises.

Long term

As discussed, short term it seems like a great investment on United’s end, yet the long term impact may benefit even more.

If Ronaldo inspires United and success follows, in addition to how big of a club United are, there is no doubt that the more talented players will be looking to book a flight to Manchester to get in on the action. This allows United to build a squad for the long term to continue with their potential success.

Some may say that younger attackers in the United squad may not benefit from the addition of a new forward who is guarenteed to start. Behind the scenes on the training ground may prove to be very beneficial for the whole squad. Ronaldo is known for his mamba mentality with regards to training and improving, which will rub off onto those surrounding him.

Furthermore, who would be better for young forwards to learn from than Ronaldo himself. With the mental advice plus physical technical attributes the younger players may learn from observing and playing with Ronaldo could really push the likes of Mason Greenwood to the top of his potential which is scary for rival fans.

All looks very promising for United fans

Overall, Manchester United fans will be licking their lips with their new arrival of their already established legend of the club. Rival fans will be biting their nails in fear of how good this United team can be, and it doesn’t appear to be a short term solution for United. United are heading on their way back to the top of European football. Watch this space football fans.
