With the Premier League 2021/22 campaign up and running, betting odds are changing and people are having varied opinions on who will be victorious this season. One team that has slipped under the radar this season is Liverpool.

The ‘favourites’

According to multiple betting companies and the general opinion of the public, it seems Liverpool have been written off as title contenders this season, well until recent results.

According the SkyBet, here are the favourites if you were to bet.

  • Manchester City @ 6/5
  • Chelsea @ 5/2
  • Manchester United @ 5/1
  • Liverpool @ 11/2
  • Tottenham Hotspur @ 33/1

Last seasons champions Manchester City are always mentioned where title contenders are concerned. With the signing of Romelu Lukaku at Chelsea, where they have significantly improved under Thomas Tuchel, their name has been thrown into the mix. One of the names constantly thrown into the discussion is Manchester United. They have signed Varane, Sancho and Ronaldo, to add to an already strong side, which on paper does put them up there.

How can Liverpool win the league?

It is in Liverpool’s history and DNA to be underdogs, and they love it. Never write Liverpool off, it just doesn’t end well. From Istanbul 2005 to Anfield against Barcelona in 2019, they show that anything is possible.

It’s not that they need a miracle to win the league by any means. Liverpool are now 14 games undefeated in the league, and the return of Virgil Van Dijk this season has brought back the fear factor to Klopp’s men. Although signings weren’t the highlight of Liverpool’s summer, the new long term contracts of players in that 2020 winning squad are of huge importance.

With VVD, Joe Gomez, and Joel Matip all returning from injury this season, its like 3 new signings. Also, Harvey Elliott has returned to Anfield as a further improved player ready to make his mark in the starting XI. It was a shame to see him suffer such a horrific injury.

Thiago is really starting to find his feet at Liverpool, and Jota has continued his fine scoring form from last season. Naby Keita has also managed to keep fit and avoid injury so far. All of these things really booster Liverpools confidence and morale to contend for the title. Ability is never in doubt.

As long as fitness issues don’t occur too frequently like last season, Klopp’s men are definitely contenders this season, who are joint top of the league with Manchester United and Chelsea. Despite the lack of depth, the talent in the first 11 can match anybody in world football and that has been shown on plenty of occasions.

Only time will tell if the Premier League trophy is heading back to Merseyside.
